HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Al and Malka Green Artists’ Health Centre (AHC)

Located at the Toronto Western Hospital, the AHC offers both complementary/alternative and conventional health care to professional creative and performing artists, and to students and staff at post-secondary arts institutions. The mandate includes research, education and outreach to the arts community.

The work of the AHC is supported by the Artists’ Health Centre Foundation

  • CARFAC Ontario

CARFAC gives regular workshops throughout Ontario for its members on health and safety issues for visual artists.

  • City of Tucson: Health and Safety in the Arts

The City of Tucson's Environmental Management Division has constructed a web-based health and safety guide for artists. It includes a database for studio safety, one for art mediums, and a recommended reading section.  Included in the database for art mediums are details about hazards associated with pigments, preservatives, painting and drawing techniques, sculpture, etc.

  • Education Safety Association of Ontario (ESAO)

The ESAO works primarily with other members of the Prevention System, the WSIB, the Ministry of Labour and the other Safe Workplace Associations and Designated Entities to develop products that teach safety to people in the education sector.  Includes links to information on health and safety for art centres, useful to visual arts working in these settings.

  • Environmental Defence Ontario

This site explains the importance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and how to obtain them.  MSDS are technical specification sheets that provide information on a product’s hazards, as well as the precautions required for safe use of the product in the working environment.
