FUNDING, GRANTS & AWARDS

  • Canada Council for the Arts

    Canada Council for the Arts is the national arts funding agency. This site provides information about the council’s grants to media artists, including travel grants, and grants available to aboriginal media artists. The council also administers a number of important awards and prizes.

  • Community Arts Councils

    A number of municipalities and regions in Ontario have arts councils which are involved in encouraging and promoting local arts and cultural activities, and funding local organizations. Some offer grants or awards for artists. All have information of interest to local artists:

  • Fusion - The Ontario Clay and Glass Association

    The FUSION Scholarship Endowment Fund provides assistance to worthy members in financial need who wish to continue their studies in the field of ceramics or glass.

  • Jean A. Chalmers Fund for the Crafts

    This fund assists non-profit organizations to undertake projects that contribute to the advancement of the crafts in Canada, and Canadian visual arts organizations to undertake projects that contribute to the advancement and understanding of the fine crafts in Canada. Individual fine crafts professionals are also eligible to apply, but only to the Research and Policy Development Assistance component of the program.

  • Ontario Arts Council (OAC)

    OAC is the province’s primary funding body for professional arts activity. This site has information about project grants that may be available to individual artists. The OAC also administers a number of important awards and prizes:

  • Ontario Crafts Council (OCC)

    OCC offers approximately $15,000 though an annual program of awards, scholarships and supply grants to student and craft professional members. Grants are organized into scholarships, grants for excellence in any craft discipline and for specific craft disciplines.

  • Ontario Handweavers and Spinners (OHS)

    OHS has a number of scholarships and awards available annually.

  • Saidye Bronfman Award

    This is Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts. The $25,000 prize is awarded annually to an exceptional craftsperson. In addition, works by the recipient are acquired by the Canadian Museum of Civilization for its permanent collection. As of March 2007 the Saidye Bronfman Award will become an eighth Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, reserved exclusively for fine craft artists.

  • Winifred Shantz Award

    The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo assists those in the field of contemporary ceramics by awarding $10,000 annually to a potter or clay sculptor for innovative professional development.
