FUNDING, GRANTS & AWARDS

• Canada Council for the Arts

  Canada Council is the national arts funding agency. It provides support for the development of individuals, groups, small ensembles, orchestras and other professionals working in the Canadian music community. In addition to tours, concert production, sound recordings and festival programming, the Music Section funds a variety of related activities such as residencies and the commissioning of Canadian compositions. The council also administers a number of important awards and prizes.

• Community Arts Councils

  A number of municipalities and regions in Ontario have arts councils which are involved in encouraging and promoting local arts and cultural activities, and funding local organizations. Some offer grants or awards for artists. All have information of interest to local artists:

• Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC)

  The CHRC offers a comprehensive guide of the most important awards and prizes given by Canadian organizations for which artists working in music and sound recording may be eligible.

• Funding

  There are a number of organizations and agencies that provide funding for artists in the music sector, including funding for domestic and international tours, recording, domestic and international showcase events, demos, videos, marketing and promotion. Some of the leading organizations include:

  1. Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records (FACTOR)
  2. Radio Starmaker Fund
  3. Canada Music Fund

  The Toronto Musicians Association also has a comprehensive list.

• Ontario Arts Council (OAC)

  OAC is the province’s primary funding body for professional arts activity. This site has information about project grants that may be available to individual artists. The OAC also administers a number of important awards and prizes.

• The Actors’ Fund of Canada

  The Actors Fund of Canada is a charity that provides financial assistance to performing arts and entertainment industry professionals who are in crisis.
